Common Conditions seen by Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

  • BLADDER

Whether you’re leaking urine, having to go to the bathroom “all the time,” waking up more than you’d like to at night, having trouble initiating a stream, post-surgical, postpartum or generally have concerns about how your bladder may be working or feeling (at ANY age, or any gender), Pelvic PT can help.

  • BOWEL

Did you know that most people should have a bowel movement everyday or so? That it should be formed, soft and easy to pass? That it shouldn’t be painful or take more than 10 minutes to perform the task? Constipation can be a source of a lot of discomfort, but it can also be the missing link in many other pelvic health concerns (like pain and leaking urine). Or perhaps you have concerns on the other end of the spectrum and have difficulty controlling gas and faeces. Pelvic PT can help with both.

  • PREGNANCY

Nervous about birth? Have new or nagging pain? Want to be as preventative as you can about potential tearing, leaking, abdominal changes and/or prolapse? Have a C-section planned and would like some post-birth guidance? Curious about starting a new exercise regime or maintaining a current one? Just want more information about it all works? Pelvic PT can help.

  • POSTPARTUM

Whether you’re minutes or years post birth there’s a role for Pelvic PT. Regardless if you birthed baby vaginally or via C-section, if you have concerns with leaking, pain (including painful sex or scars), organs “falling out,” Diastatis Recti Abdominis (DRA), how your body may be functioning post birth, how to return to activity or anything that just doesn’t feel “right,” Pelvic PT can help. It’s never too late and it’s not “just what happens” when you have a baby.

  • POST-SURGICAL

If your surgery has occurred somewhere between your neck and mid-thigh Pelvic PT can help. Most commonly seen are those who are post-prostatectomy, others include (but not limited to) prolapse repair, bladder surgeries, bowel resection, cancer tumour removal and radiation (including mastectomy), laparoscopic surgeries, C-Sections, gender confirmation and more.

  • PAIN

Many conditions fall under this category: pain post surgery (C-sections, post prostatectomy, pelvic or abdominal surgeries, scar pain etc); Vestibulodynia, Vulvodynia, Vaginismus, Dyspareunia (pain with intercourse), Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome; endometriosis related pain; pregnancy related pain; prostatitis, testicular pain, penile pain, low back/pelvis/hip pain etc. If you have pain in or around your pelvis Pelvic PT can help.

  • ENDOMETRIOSIS

Pelvic floor dysfunction is a common condition seen in people with endometriosis, or endometriosis-like symptoms. In response to persistent pain, quite often the abdominal, pelvic and gluteal (butt) muscles become very active and protective. When a muscle is “always on” it can lose it’s ability to relax. This not only increases pain but also decreases function.

Pelvic PT can help with pain associated with endometriosis, abdominal discomfort, bowel concerns, overall mobility and strength deficits, and address many of lifestyle aspects known to influence symptoms of endometriosis such as stress, sleep and nutrition.

  • MENOPAUSE

You can’t escape it, and we can’t make it go away but Pelvic PT can help with many symptoms of menopause (in addition to working with your health care provider).

Addressing painful intercourse, an increase/change in bladder or prolapse concerns, or changes in bowel habits are common areas we work on. Zooming out, pelvic PT can also play a role in restoring movement. Exercise has shown to play a role in managing hot flashes, bone loss, poor sleep, stress and other side effects of fluctuating hormones

Learning how to modifying the things that can be changed can not only lessen symptoms but also reduce the onset of new ones.
